Web‘Hellvellyn’s Summit Shelter’. Lake District, Central Fells. Standing just above the East Face of Helvellyn on the summit plateau is this cross walled shelter. In winter it provides welcome protection from the icy winds whatever their direction. The summit of Helvellyn takes the form of a broad plateau, sloping gently to the south-west, but dropping abruptly to the north-east into Red Tarn cove. So smooth and large is this summit that a small aeroplane was able to land on it in 1926 (see History below).
