Late that year, Savage drilled scope mounting holes in the reciever. 1952 was about the peak production year for the 99, the EG was their most popular model, and the 300 the most popular chambering. On the author’s 1942-vintage 99 RS, while the buttpad is slightly curved to fit the shoulder, it’s all steel. The rifle I bought is a 1942-vintage, 99 RS in .300 Savage. The RS had, as standard, a Redfield aperture sight mounted at the rear of the receiver. The barrel is 24 inches with a ramped front sight.

There wasn't a whole lot of them made in 308 before 1960 so collectors and hunters are looking for them.
